Arland David Dix, 77, of Pipestem, WV, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
David, ?Sonny Boy?, was born January 1, 1936, in Hix, WV, the son of the late Fred G. Dick, and Joy (Gunnoe) Dick of Beckley, WV. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Kermet and Don, and a sister, Alfreda.
A 1954 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV, David embarked on a career in education. He obtained degrees from Beckley College, Bluefield State, and earned a MA in School Administration from West Virginia University. He obtained Doctorate hours in Science at WVU, Marshall, and UVA.. As a school teacher, David devoted his first three years at Clear Fork HS in WV. The following 21 years, he served in the role of principal at the elementary and secondary levels in Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. In addition, he was also an adjunct professor at Beckley College, College of Southern, and WVU. David also taught science summer camps throughout Fayette County. He laid groundwork for introduction and establishment of PEIA in WV. In 1972, he was a congressional candidate in West Virginia's second district.
David was a sports enthusiast. He introduced soccer as a scholastic sport in WV and also was the first certified WVIAC soccer official. He coached soccer at Elkview, WV, and Marietta, OH; basketball at Waterford High School, OH; golf at Blennerhassett Elementary in Parkersburg. David held two senior national bowling titles and eight WV senior championship titles. He also enjoyed chess and historical board games.
David was a member of The First United Methodist Church. He believed his accomplishments were in truth, loyalty, and perseverance in ethical achievements ? in all endeavors.
Family left to cherish his memory are his wife, Judy (Hill) Dix; former wife, Sharon (Hurst) Dix, Beckley, WV; daughter, Karin (Dix) Morris, Charleston, WV; son, Sean Dix, Parkersburg, WV; three sisters; Rosemary (Dick) Bosley, Pipestem, WV; Wilma Dean (Dick) Fisher, Titusville, FL; Norma Jean (Dick) Gunter, Vienna, WV; four grandchildren; Austin Dix, Brandon Dix, Mallory Fields, Kristen Warden and five great grandchildren.
Ronald Meadows Funeral Home, 130 Temple Street, Hinton, WV has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Gravesite Rites will be held at Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley, WV, Friday, February 8, 2013 at 12:00 pm.
