Bernice Arbutus Gill Allen

Bernice Arbutus Gill Allen ,79 years old, was received into heaven by her Angels to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Thursday November 14th, 2024, after her brave and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born on April 2, 1945, in Hinton WV, she was the daughter of John Estil Gill and Odessa Lee Gill of Hinton. She was a graduate of Hinton High School class of 1962. She married the love of her life, David Rex Allen, on September 22nd of 1963. She was a devoted wife and companion to her husband for 61 wonderful years. He gave her the absolute best care and compassion throughout her battle with cancer, never leaving her side.

She gave birth to her first-born son, Phillip David Allen on June 21st, 1967, then three years later she gave birth to her only daughter Jennifer Lynne Allen on August 20th, 1970, and then on August 5th, 1981 she gave birth to Jonathan Rex Allen.

She was a stay-at-home mother and raised her three children with love and admiration that carried on throughout her life. She began her career in Jewelry in 1982 at Lilly’s Crown Jewelers, becoming the most successful salesperson and manager in the company for many years. After a brief retirement, she was coaxed into becoming one of the most successful saleswomen at Reeds Jewelers in Charleston WV. She earned the nickname of Mommaw to all the people who worked with her. She helped in creating some of the greatest milestones and memories for her devoted friends and customers for many years.

She was especially proud of her son Phillip and daughter Jennifer who carried on with her legacy in the jewelry business. Some of her most joyful moments were spent with her loving dog Penelope, who she always referred to as her baby. Penelope was always by her side especially when mom wasn’t feeling well. She loved her flower beds and many decorative pieces in her yard. One of her favorite places was at the beach. She loved to sit and watch the ocean with her family and friends, especially her sisters-in-law Mary Harvey and Shirley Mills. She was so happy while watching her grandchildren play on the beach and feeling the warmth of the sun. She also loved to take long walks with anyone who would accompany her.

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband and devoted caregiver, David R. Allen of St. Albans; Her son Phillip D. Allen and wife Angela Dawn Allen of St. Albans; Her daughter Jennifer Allen-Raynes and husband Matt Raynes of St. Albans and her son Jonathan Allen and Crystal of Rock Hill SC. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren who she adored and was so very proud of Morgan Allen-Hizer and husband Tyler Hizer of St. Albans, Phillip Gage Allen and wife Bree Allen and her great granddaughter Marlee of Eleanor, Bentleigh Allen and loving companion Shane Walker of Sissonville and Alex Thomas of Morgantown. As well as countless family and friends who had the pleasure of knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Estil Gill and Odessa Lee Gill, and her brother James Edward Gill.
