Bobby Lewis "Bob" Wheeler, 79, of Hinton, died unexpectedly July 13, 2014. Born, September, 11, 1934 in Sciota County, Minford, OH he was a son of the late Rev. Eldridge Carl "Buck" Wheeler and Ruby Amanda Keffer Wheeler.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Hyden Wheeler; one son, Timothy Lewis Wheeler; one daughter, Christy Lea Wheeler Wright; three grandchildren, Melinda Kay Wheeler, Brock Andrew Wright and Lakin Ruth Wright; two great grandchildren, Natalie Michelle Stover and Samuel Gage Stover; one sister, Jeanie Ratliff and husband Bobbie Rex Ratliff of Union; one brother, Garry Wheeler and one uncle, Eugene Keffer.
Bobby was a faithful member of Elk Knob Baptist Church since October 1954. He was also Sunday school superintendent and a trustee of the church.
He worked for Marion Power Shovel Company in Marion, OH as a certified machinist from 1953-1954. In 1955, he was a foreman for Ohio Carbon Company in Cleveland, OH. In September 1955, he joined the Hinton Police Department. April 1957, he was stationed with the US Army at Fort Jackson, SC and Fort Sill, OK. In 1958, he was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ and then in Germany as a Private First Class. In April 1959, he was discharged and the same year returned to the Hinton Police Department. In September 1959, he was promoted to Sgt. for the Hinton Police Department and in 1962 he was appointed Chief of Police for the Hinton Police Department. Bobby was a special agent for the C&O, Chessie System, CSX Railroad from July 1, 1963- October 1996. He served a total of 38 years and 10 months as a police officer. He joined the WV Fraternal Order of Police in 1955 and held various positions including serving as an officer from 1966-1985. Bobby, along with Barney Segal of Beckley, wrote a draft recommending a 40 hour police officer work week, which passed and became a law in 1962. Bobby was a member of the Hinton City Council from 1996-2004. He served on the Civil Service Commision for 22 years for the City of Hinton. Bobby was the first chairman of Hinton High School Order of DeMolay and was awarded the Legend of Honor, confirmed at Charleston, WV in 1968-1969. He was a long time member of the Hinton Lions Club where as he served as past President and was very active in all aspects of the club.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastors Robbie Merritt, Bobbie Rex Ratliff and Raymond Klaiber officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6:00-9:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral parlors.
Mike Ratliff, Phillip Ratliff, Jeff Ratliff, Jody Ratliff, Tommy Miller and Eddie Fernatt will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be, Bill Jefferies, Joe Blankenship, Travis Grimmett and Dwight "Ike" Huffman.
