Cathy L. Willey, 53, of Nimitz departed this earth to be in heaven Thursday, April 3, 2014 at University of Virginia Medical Center following a courageous battle with leukemia.
Born July 19, 1960 in Hinton, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Ila Harvey Thompson.
Cathy was a 1978 graduate of Hinton High School, obtaining her LPN licensure from the Summers County School of Practical Nursing. She then went on to achieve her RN after graduating from Bluefield State College with an Associate of Nursing degree. She later specialized in critical care. Cathy served as a nurse, caring for the needs of others for 34 years, with the last 17 years in Raleigh General Hospital's Critical Care Unit. She was a former troop leader of the Black Diamond Girl Scouts in Jumping Branch. Cathy enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, her beloved cats along with any creatures great and small, taking walks and spending time with her family.
Cathy has reunited with her dear friend Susie Jones.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 33 years, Joe; one daughter, Paige Bowers and husband Liam of Charlottesville, VA; one son, Todd Willey and wife Emily of Lexington, VA; three sisters, Evelyn Stone and husband Jerry of Christiansburg, VA, Carolyn Cartwright and husband Tom of Austin, TX and Betty Saunders and husband Steve of Cupertino, CA; two brothers, Eddie Thompson of Staunton, VA and Danny Thompson and wife Drema of Graham, NC; father- in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Geneva Willey of Hinton; two brothers- in- law, Danny Willey and wife Rhonda of Hinton and Randy Willey of Kernersville, NC in addition to the numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
The family would like to thank all of Cathy's friends and family who supported her during this time especially Eugene Jones and her wonderful co-workers in the CCU at Raleigh General Hospital.
A celebration of life will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Bobby Reed officiating. Burial will follow at the Lilly-Crews Cemetery in Nimitz. Friends may call from 6:00 - 9:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral parlors.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
If a donation is wished to be made in Cathy's memory her favorite charities were the Humane Society, the Alzheimer's Association and the American Cancer Society.
