Jack Dempsey Yancey, 80, of Disputanta, VA formerly of Hinton, passed into eternal rest, February 15, 2009 at the VCU Medical Center, Richmond, VA following a short illness. Born July 23, 1928 at Winding Gulf in Raleigh Co. he was the son of the late John William and Hilda Marie Young Yancey. A former Telegrapher for the C&O Railway he was present at the Meadow Creek Tower when local #7 derailed and knocked over the tower. Jack escaped injury and afterward resigned his job with the C&O to seek other employment. He served his country in three different branches of the military, first with the Navy as a Yeoman from 1945-1946, then with the Army Paratroopers in the 11th Airborne from 1947-1950 and finally as a Staff Sergeant with the Air Force from 1951-1955. An alumni of Pasadena City College and San Diego State University where he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Television Communications, employed by the Dept. of Corrections at the Petersburg Federal Reformatory as a Case Manager where he retired in 1986 with 20 years of service. Jack was a resident of Disputanta, VA for 20 years and was of the Methodist Faith. He enjoyed his family, animals and traveling the past several years. Preceded in death by three infant brothers, one infant sister and two other sisters, Kellan Phipps in 1995 and Rinda Shannon in 2009. Survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Kay Treadway Yancey; one daughter, Lesley Erinn Yancey at home; one brother, Edgar E. Yancey and wife Peggy of Covington, VA; two sisters, Becky Crunk of Charlotte, NC and Janice Coughenour and husband Dean of Hinton; twenty nieces and nephews, twenty-four great nieces and nephews, two aunts, Eileen Angell of Madams Creek and Francis Yancey of Roanoke, VA and several cousins. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Grover Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton. Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. until service time on Wednesday. His family will serve as pallbearers.
