Herbert ?Curtis? Adkins, 80, of Sandstone went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 21, 2011 at his home following a short illness.
Born September 5, 1930 at Sandstone he was the son of the late Caskey and Gertie Taylor Adkins. A retired CSX employee with the Maintenance of Way with 40 years service, a Christian who had put his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
Preceded in death by five brothers, Edward, James, Arnold, Johnny and Ernest Adkins.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 45 years, Louise Bowles Cales Adkins of Sandstone, five stepchildren whom he treated and loved as his own include one daughter, Margaret Ruger and husband Norm of Payne, OH; four sons, Hayward Cales of Sandstone, Jackie Cales and wife Janet of Sandstone, Jimmy Cales of Reidsville, NC, David Cales of Hinton; twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-six great grandchildren, thirteen great-great grandchildren; one sister, Edith Andrews of Meadow Bridge; two brothers, Eldridge Adkins of Latty, OH and Arthur Adkins and wife Judy of Woodbridge, VA and special sister-in-law, Paulett Adkins of Hinton.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
