Ernest Lee Atwell, 97, of Pence Springs went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday June 2, 2020 at Harper Mills Nursing Home following a short illness.
Born February 20, 1923 at Creamery he was a son of the late Alex and Katherine Ryan Atwell.
Ernest was a member of the Pence Springs Community Church. He was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran and Prisoner of War who received a Purple Heart for his courageous service to his country. Ernest was a custodial engineer for the Summers County Board of Education working at Talcott school with 20 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, gun collecting and trading and carpentry. Ernest was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Audrey Atwell; two sisters, Chloe Allen and Pearl Noyes; two brothers, Carl and William Atwell; son in law, Marvin Newberry and grandson, Andy Newberry.
Those left to cherish his memory include one daughter, Nancy Newberry of Akron, OH and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 6, 2020 at Pence Springs Community Church with Pastor Roger Persinger officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at the church. Burial will follow in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Pence Springs. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. For the safety of the family and community precautionary guidelines will be followed.
