Jim enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and went into active duty in October 1943 at the age of 18, and served in the Pacific Theater as a United States Navy Armed Guard from 1944 to 1946.
After the War, he worked for the coal mines as a machinery repairman, when he was also called to preach. He was the pastor of Rupert Missionary Baptist Church from 1965 to 1996. While in Rupert, he built a parsonage, with the help of other church members. After retirement, and moving back to Talcott, WV, he and Chick became members of Rollynsburg Baptist Church. He would occasionally fill in when needed. He loved the Lord and was the happiest when he was able to stand in the pulpit.
In his spare time, he pursued carpentry, hunting, and fishing. Jim also looked forward each year when it was time to plant his garden. There was always an abundant supply of tomatoes, corn and potatoes to mention a few of his crops.
