Esther Fitzsimmons

Esther Iris Bennett Reed Fitzsimmons, 97, died April 11, 2014 at Bethany Lutheran Village, Centerville, OH. She was born November 2, 1916 in White Oak, WV to Elbert and Eunice Mooney Bennett. She was the second oldest of eight children, had a dry and mischievous sense of humor, and enjoyed nothing more than bringing joy to others.
She married Ronald L. Reed and lived in a number of southern WV communities, spending many years in Beckley. During these years Esther was crowned Mrs. West Virginia in 1956 and participated in the Mrs. America contest for her outstanding homemaking skills, achievements and community involvement; followed by participation in the Mrs. America contest in Daytona Beach, FL that same year. She was a fulltime mother, homemaker and community volunteer and very active in her church, The Methodist Temple in Beckley. She was active in the ladies programs, served as a co-leader for the Girl Scouts and a volunteer for the Pinecrest Sanitarium. Esther and her husband Ronald owned and managed Reed's Market in Hinton for a number of years. She also enjoyed the Garden Club and Delphi and she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hinton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald L. Reed; her parents, Elbert and Eunice Bennett; her husband, James Fitzsimmons; her brothers, Curtis Bennett, Clair Bennett and Carl Bennett; and her sister Mary Bennett Cantrell.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Sandra Reed Mitchell and son-in-law James H. Mitchell, Jr., of Kettering, OH; her granddaughter, Amy Leigh Raines, Lt Col, USMCR, of Scott AFB, IL; her grandson, Christopher Reed Raines, Lt Col, USAF (Christy, Hannah) of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Edna Bennett of Covington, VA; sister, Betty Bennett Agee (Harold) of Memphis, TN; sister-in-law, Lucille Webb Bennett of Hinton, WV; step granddaughter Jennifer Mitchell Morlok (Brian, Olivia & Sydney) of Columbus, IN; stepson Tom (Carolyn) of Hinton, WV; step granddaughter, Sarah Fern Fitzsimmons Lingenfelter (Robert); step grandson, Thomas Fitzsimmons (Lindsay & Jacob); Frances Meadows sister-in-law of CT: brother-in-law, James Reed of Pipestem, WV and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Rick Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 10:00 am until service time on Wednesday at the funeral parlor.
