George Malcolm Kounse, 91, of Pence Springs went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Born March 15, 1926 at Pence Springs, he was the son of the late Walter Percy and Rosa Lewis Campbell Kounse. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country in World War II in Germany, Austria, and the South Pacific. George was a steel worker in the Newport News shipyards, a carpenter, an avid hunter and fisherman, proud member of the NRA, a proud Mountaineer and a historian of Pence Springs. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Ann Shaffer Kounse; one son, George Malcolm Kounse, Jr.; a stepdaughter, Lois Ann Fox; and seven brothers and sisters, William Kyle Kounse, Lillian Pearl Kounse Johnson, Winford Paul Kounse, Basil Douglas Kounse, Golda Elizabeth Kounse Walton, Nelle Blye Morgan, and Kenneth Pat Kounse.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Brenda Ruth Kounse Willey and husband David of Pence Springs; his stepson, Lloyd Edgar "Butch" Fox and wife Martha of Pinetown, NC; a special daughter-in-law, Renee Kounse; five grandchildren, David Mark Willey and wife Tammy Renee of Pence Springs; Andrea Willey Hatcher and husband Chad of Eden, NC; Erin Willey Ambler and husband Michael of Pence Springs; Sherri Lynn Fox of Pinetown, NC; and Angela Fox Wells and husband Simon of Pinetown, NC; fifteen great grandchildren, Katherine, Charlotte, Nora, Jacob B., Malcolm, Jacob M., Lincoln, Tessa, Kadence, Kodant, Hailee, Casey, Curtis, Maxwell and Brodie. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Pence Springs Community Church with Pastor Roger Persinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Pence Springs. Visitation will be from noon until time of services on Wednesday at the church.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers with Ernest Atwell and Ray Lowry serving as honorary pallbearers.
