Gilbert W. Petrey, 86, of Hilldale went home to be with the Lord, Friday October 16, 2009 at Summers Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Born September 9, 1923 at Pipestem he was a son of the late Ward and Nina Campbell Petrey and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A United States Navy Veteran who served his country during World War II, carpenter and avid woodworker he enjoyed gospel singing and attending church at the Hinton Gospel Tabernacle.
Preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Carol Petrey, and Carolyn Christa Petrey in 1987; one son, Fred Scott Petrey in 1989 and several brothers and sisters.
Survived by seven children, Nina Walters and husband Jimmy of Lerona, Kathy Yancey and husband Charles of Fairdale, Gilbert Wayne Petrey of Beckley, Sarah Martin and husband Scott of Clayton, NC, Florence Keaton and husband Lonnie of Pipestem, Michael Petrey and wife Michelle of St. Albans and Angela Richmond of Lerona; ten grandchildren, Raymond Neely, Ricky and Justin Yancey, Josh and Nicole Yancey, Matthew Keaton, Brandon Martin, Fredric Petrey, Jonathan Richmond and Tessa Conner and one great grandchild, Conner Yancey.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Lawrence Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery at Powleys Creek. Friends may call from 2:00 P.M. until service time on Sunday.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
