Gladys Elizabeth Canterbury Smith, 78, of Hinton, died Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Summers Co. Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness. Born August 4, 1929 at Bellepoint, she was the daughter of the late Andrew L. and Mamie Arbella Mann Canterbury. She was a member of the Springfield Primative Baptist Church at Greenville; Valedictorian of Hinton High School Class of 1947; taught school at Streeter and Big Creek; Director of Youth Activities at the American Youth Activities Center in Weierhof Germany and worked in the Finance Dept. at Fort Dix, NJ. She was an avid quilter for Quilts Unlimited and a charter member of the Hilldale-Talcott Ruritan Club. Preceded in death by two sisters; Ruth Moye and Edith Spade. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, William C. â??Tedâ?? Smith at Home; one daughter, Judith Carol Dolphin and husband Ed of Forest Hill; one son, William L. â??Jackâ?? Smith of Forest Hill. Three sisters; Glenna Harvey and husband Osby of Peterstown; Thelma A. â??Peggyâ?? Moye of Jasper, TN; and Nellie Grey Dixon of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Five Grandchildren; Sgt. First Class Marc E. Dolphin and wife Randi, Sean Patrick Dolphin and wife Michele, Christine Lynn Hughes and husband Marty, Catherine Elizabeth Alan and husband Josh and Tara Lee Canales and husband Ricardo. Nine Great Grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 16, 2008 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Elder Jimmy Boothe officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens at Hinton. Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors from 6-8 pm Wednesday.
