G.W. Lightner

G. W."Dick"Lightner, 85 of Brooks passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born April 10, 1929 at Elverton, WV he was a son of the late George William and Emma Elizabeth Reynolds Lightner.
Dick began working for the C& O Railroad as an Equipment Operator in 1945 at the age of 16. In 1968 he opened Lightner's Sports Grill. He was also was a bail bondsman for over 30 years.
Dick enjoyed hunting at his camp, fishing, WV Mountaineer football and gardening- he grew the best tomatoes and corn and the hottest Hungarian wax peppers.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Catherine Bowden Lightner; two brothers, James Lightner and George Thomas Lightner; one sister, Rena Hilton and a very special nephew, William Douglas Lightner.
Survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy King Lightner at home; two sons, Lloyd "Bill" Lightner and wife Betty and John "Rockie" Lightner all of Alderson; grandchildren, Eric Lightner and wife Lhynn of Abilene, TX, Elizabeth Copenhaver and husband Travis, Billy Lightner and wife Pam all of Alderson, Julie Lightner of Hinton and seven great grandchildren.
Also survived by his step children Charles Vannatter and wife Delma of Oak Hill, Gail Howard and husband Dwayne of Martinsburg and Becky Greenaway of Brooks; grandchildren, Rick Howard of FL, Chris Howard of KY, Brianna Howard of NC and Amy Bruce of AZ; five great grandchildren and a host of friends who will cherish his memories forever.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, November 21, 2014 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenbrier Burial Park near Hinton. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.
Pallbearers will be Bill Lightner, Billy Lightner, Rockie Lightner, Travis Copenhaver, Charles Cox and Wayne Grimmett.
Honorary pallbearers are Chris Howard, Miller Murrell, Tink Ritter, Kent Hellems, Jim Thomas and Harold Spicer.
The family would like to extend special thanks to SCARH 2nd Floor Nursing Staff and Dr. Chhabra for the wonderful care provided and the kindness shown by them all.
