Haven Miller

November 29, 1937 — April 5, 2019

U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Haven Leonard Miller, 81, of Nimitz went to his heavenly home on April 5th, 2019. He was born November 29th, 1937 to the late Leonard Preston Miller & Muriel F. Canterbury Miller in Raleigh County, WV. He was raised on a farm on Kirby Mountain in Clayton, WV. He attended & graduated from Kirby Mountain School, a one room schoolhouse that only went to the eighth grade. He attended Talcott High School for one year in the 9th grade. At 13 years old he quit school & went to work for Smith Contracting in Indianapolis, Indiana. At 17 years old he joined the U.S. Air Force. Haven started out in Air Craft Maintenance, later becoming a flight engineer. He began flying on a B-25, later he was a flight engineer on several airplanes including: C-47s or Gooney Bird, T-29s, C-7As or Caribou, & he did maintenance on C-124s or Shaky. During his flying career he logged in over 5000 hours flying. As a C-47 Flight Engineer while stationed in Ramstein, Germany, Haven Flew VIP for Two Star General Gabriel P. Disosway & General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr; the man that organized the Tuskegee Airmen. Haven served in Vietnam where he flew more than 200 combat support missions. In Vietnam he received the Distinguished Flying Cross & 5 flying medals. His last 2 years he was an Aircraft Quality Control Inspector. Haven retired as a Master Sergeant with 20 years of service.
Haven enjoyed hunting & fishing with his two sons, his grandchildren, & other family members. They hunted & fished in West Virginia, Utah, Alaska, Montana, & Virginia. He enjoyed gardening, attending church at Bluestone Baptist where he was a member, traveling across the United States with his wife, Ann, & spending time with his family & friends especially his great grandsons Preston & Carter, whom he loved very much.
Haven was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard & Muriel Miller; his wife, Shirley Ann Miller; a brother, Hugh Miller & wife Thelma; a niece & her husband, Nora & Ricky Riggs.
Haven is survived by two sons; Ray & wife Peggy Miller, and Gary Miller; two grandchildren, Tyler Miller & companion Meaghan Williams, Shelley Miller & fiancé Josh Summers, two great-grandchildren, Preston Miller & Carter Miller, his special companion cat, Toby, two stepsons; Greg Jones & wife Mindy, and Stacy Jones, two step-granddaughters; Trista Workman and Kelsey Parker, special nephews & niece; Norman & wife LeAnn Miller, Norine & husband Jeff Boggess, & Nolan Miller, also surviving are his former wife Beverly Miller and special friends; Lorene & Bob Cales, & Jerry & Shelby Warden.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Friday April 12, 2019 at Bluestone Baptist Church with Pastors Bill Fox and Butch Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Haven of Rest Cemetery at Pence Springs. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Thursday April 11, 2019 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel and at the church on Friday one hour prior to the services.
Tyler Miller, Eric Persinger, Johnny Bowling, Zach Bowling, Dale Hedrick, Steve Hedrick, Norman Miller and Josh Summers will serve as pallbearers.
Jerry Warden will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to thank the Bluestone Baptist Church, Dr. Stanley & Mrs. Betty Day, & Dr. Ratliff & her staff for everything they have done & meant to Haven & Ann.
