Howard Milton Creed, 76 of Hinton died Wednesday morning April 9, 2008 at his home following a short illness. Born September 28, 1931 at Caretta in the McDowell Co. Coalfields and was a son of the late Shade Milton and Selma Edith Folden Creed. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by three sons; Stewart Milton, Jerry and James Hubert Creed and one sister Judy Creed. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton since April 5, 1959 where he served as an Elder, Trustee and Treasurer. He had obtained the rank of Eagle Scout; A graduate of Big Creek High School where he was a member of the Key Club, Beta Club, Hi-Y Club and the National Honor Society. He attended Camp Ceaser and was a representative of the Caretta-Coalwood Conservation Club while attending high school. Mr. Creed studied pre-pharmacy at Concord College in Athens, WV and was a graduate of WVU College of Pharmacy in 1955. After returning to Hinton in 1955 he was employed by John Hickman at the Hickman-Puckett Pharmacy and married Phyllis June Harris on October 31, 1957. He began purchasing the pharmacy in 1958 and renamed the pharmacy the Creed Pharmacy in 1962. Elected Charter President of the Hinton Jaycees in 1959; served as president of the Hinton Lions Club; prior state president of the West Virginia Jaycees 1961-1962; Honored as the WV Jaycees Key Man of the Year in 1961; Jaycee of the year by the Hinton Jaycees in 1962; chosen as Outstanding Vice President of WV Jaycees in 1962; served as a representative to the United States Jaycees National Convention in order to receive the award for the Project of the Year for the construction of the Summers County Hospital in 1973; presented with the Jaycee International Senatorship by the Hinton Jaycees in 1975; named to the Board of Directors at Summers Co. Hospital in 1976; appointed as the pharmacist at Summers Co. Hospital in 1976; Assistant coach for the Hinton Jaycee Football Midget League from 1968 to 1973; upon retirement in 1996 he was awarded the certificate of appreciation for 20 years of service by Appalachian Regional Hospital; elected Charter President of the Hinton Ruritan Club in 1992; Chairman of the Summers County Christmas Toy Fund from 1993-2006; President of the Hinton Ruritan Club in 2003 and 2004; In 2006 was honored by the President of the United States as recipient the Presidents Volunteer Service Award by the Presidentâ??s Council on Service and Civic Participation; served as Grand Marshall of the West Virginia Water Festival Parade in 2006 and earned the Tom Downing Fellow award from the Ruritan National Foundation in 2007. Survived by his wife of 50 years Phyllis June Harris Creed; one son Thomas Alan Creed of Hinton; one granddaughter Alysia Brook Creed and fiancé Jeremy Gay of Monroe, N.C.; one step- granddaughter Kristen Ball of Beckley and one step grandson Nichols Ball of Monroe NC; two great grandsons Trevor and Tristin Creed of Monroe, N.C.; 3 Sisters; Nancy Johnson of Baltimore, MD, Peggy Knight of Deerpark , TX, Debbie Frazier of Columbus, GA; 2 Brothers; Hubert Creed of Deland, Fl and Dennis Creed of Beckley. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Saturday April 12, 2008 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Rev. Stewart McMurray, Rev. Robert Glaser and Rev. Dr. Barbara Romfo officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens at Hinton. Friend may call from 5pm till 8pm Friday at the funeral parlor. Nephews will serve as pallbears. The family request that in lieu of flowers donation be made to the Summers County Toy Fund in C/O Darrell Lilly P.O. Box 67 Nimitz, WV 25978.
