Ira Linzy Greer, 77, of Jumping Branch, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, after a courageous 7 month battle with bladder cancer. His loving wife of 47 years, Peggy, son Gary and grandson Christopher Edward met him at the Pearly Gates with arms out stretched in welcome. Ira was born on May 17, 1931 in Indian Springs, Tennessee, he was the son of the late William and Josephine Bailey Greer. He was in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force for over 20 years. He was stationed in Boston, Illinois, Panama, France, Germany and Alabama. He retired in Alabama as a Tech Sergeant in 1970. He then started his long, but passionate career as an X-ray Technician, where he served as supervisor at the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital for 8 years and later at Summers Co. Appalachian Regional Hospital for 17 years, until he retired in 1993. He was lovingly referred to in his hometown as the â??X-Ray Manâ??. Ira never met a person he didnâ??t like, or a person he couldnâ??t talk to, and vice versa. Everyone loved Iraâ??s Casual Ways and friendly nature. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years; Peggy, a son; Gary, and a grandson; Christopher Edward. He was also preceded in death by six brothers; Conley, Minis, Dexter, Estle, Charlie and Millard and 3 sisters; Pauline, Cora and Eula. He is survived by his â??daddyâ??s girlâ??, daughter Cathy Lynn Greer-Short and son-in-law Richard Edward of Hinton/Jumping Branch, three grandsons; Benjamin Steven, Richard Paul and Matthew Edward and two granddaughters; Catherine â??Cateyâ?? Lindsay and Emily Jo Anna Short all at home, one brother; Paul Greer of Lewisburg, a brother-in-law; Eugene Farley and wife Ann of Princeton and many, many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday August 25, 2008 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor chapel in Hinton with Pastor Ernie Junior Moye officiating. Entombment with Full Military Honors will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral parlor from 5 to 8 P.M. on Sunday. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbears.
