Jack L. â??Buzzâ?? Hellems, 78, of 104 Temple Street, Hinton, died 5:30 A.M. Friday January 9, 2009 at his home following an extended illness. Born August 31, 1930 at Madams Creek, Hinton, he was the son of the late Earl L. and Mary Wallace Hellems. Buzz was a 1948 graduate of Hinton High School and attended Concord College. A Veteran of the United States Navy who served his country on the USS Orion, a lifelong resident of Hinton where he owned and operated Hellems Cash Store for more than 58 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hinton where he served as an Elder and Trustee, he was a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 A.F. & A.M. and the Beni Kedem Shrine of Charleston. A lifelong Democrat who served Summers Co. as a member of the West Virginia State Senate from 1975 to 1976 and a former chairman of the Summers County Democrat Executive Committee, a former Director of the National Bank of Summers and Horizon Bank Corp. Buzz was an avid fan of the Dodgers and an honorary member of the Bobcat Football Hall of Fame.Survived by his wife of 51 years, Glenda Hamm Hellems; two sons, E. Kent Hellems of Hinton and Jack Kennedy Hellems and wife Connie of Hinton; two daughters, Beth Hellems of Waynesburg, PA and Janie Sayre and husband Tim of Waverly, WV; Five grandchildren, Megan and Bryce Sayre, Maggie Hellems, Paige and Emma Hellems; one sister Mary June Cales and husband George of Beckley.Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday, January 12, 2009 at the Hinton First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robbie Merritt and Rev. Dr. Barbara Romfo officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton. Friends may call from 5-9 P.M.
