On the evening of Friday, February 27th, James Basham peacefully slipped away into the arms of Christ following a long illness at UVA Hospital Charlottesville, Virginia. James was born on November 9th, 1927 in Hinton and was the son of the late Lyndsay Basham and Ocie Nabors Basham. He was raised on Southside and remained in Hinton where he met his adored wife of 56 years, Latona Basham, and they raised their family. His family and friends will always remember James as a man of patient gentleness, kindness, and duty. He spent his retirement years as avid craftsman, gardener, fisherman, and loving grandfather. James, known to many of his railroad friends as â??Scrubbieâ??, was employed by the C&O Railroad as a clerk for 42 years. When his nation beckoned for service, he willingly served two years in the US Army in Post-World War Two Japan. James faithfully serviced Christ as a member of Beech Run Baptist Church. Besides his parents James is preceded in death by his only brother, Robert Basham and his two sisters, Dorothy Bryant and Lillian Jackson. Until the heavenly reunion of his remaining family, he will be greatly missed by his wife Latona, his three children Jimmy Basham, Linda Ratcliffe, and Mary Shaffer and husband Carl, all of Hinton. Six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Five sisters, Evelyn Ailstock of Richmond VA., Helen Angell, June Meadows and Betty Jean Girard all of Hinton, and Pasty Roberts of Kingsport, TN. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel with Pastor Sonny Angell and Pastor Roy B. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton. Friends may call at the funeral parlor from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Monday.
