James E. Monroe, Sr.

James E. Monroe, Sr, of Talcott died December 21, 2024. Born December 30, 1931, in Hinton he was the son of the late Rev. Frank W. and Hallie Greene Monroe. Mr. Monroe was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice Halloran Monroe, his second wife, Joan Briers Woodrum Monroe and a sister Doris Ann Konnerup.

 Jim’s lifelong work was with plants, founding Greenbrier Nurseries at Talcott and serving as a landscape architect for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. He served his community as a charter member of the Hilldale Talcott Ruritan Club and was instrumental in developing the original John Henry Memorial. He was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent at Trinity United Methodist Church. Respected by his peers in the nursery industry, Jim served in various leadership capacities in the West Virginia Nurseryman’s Association and the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show Board.

 He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. William and Norma Monroe of Florence, SC and Rev. Paul and Dianne Monroe of Columbia, SC; his son, James Monroe, Jr., of Talcott; his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Alfred Hannah of Daniels and Sarah and Steve Hester of Lenoir, NC; grandchildren, Megan Hannah Barbour (Jonathan), Lee Hannah (Jillian), Joe Hester, Sam Hester (Katelyn) and Maddie Monroe; four great grandsons, Ryland and Griffin Barbour and Henry and Paul Hannah; special great niece, Janet Gibson and numerous nieces and nephews.

 Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Friday December 27, 2024 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Rev. Bill Monroe and Rev. Paul Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenbrier Burial Park in Hinton. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Friday at the funeral parlors.

 Grandsons and Great Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

 The family encourages friends to plant a tree in memory of Jim and contribute to a charity or church of their choosing.
