John Gill

John Estil Gill, 88, of Tug Creek Mountain, Hinton, was called home by the Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at the Summers Co. ARH at Hinton, following a long illness. Estil was born February 21, 1918 in Hinton to John Jordan and DeLaney Adkins Gill of Hinton. He was a member of the Hinton Church of Christ where he taught Bible Classes for many years. Estil will always be remembered for his great love of God and his family. He was a gospel preacher for many churches in the area, starting from the time he was 18 years old. He could be counted on whenever there was a need for his services. Estil loved music and loved to sing. He was especially proud of the mountain dulcimers he made and taught himself to play. His favorite songs were those made famous by the original Carter Family Group of the early 1940â??s, particularly the Wildwood Flower and the Little Church in the Wildwood. His work as a mechanic for many years made him numerous friends. He never met a stranger and was a great story teller. He loved to talk about his many experiences working with the CCC Camps during the Great Depression, when he was a young man and working to build the Bluestone Dam at Hinton. He loved the outdoors, working in his garden and especially warm sunny days. He always said â??I need to be in the sunshineâ??. He is at rest now, basking in the sunshine of Godâ??s Love. Preceded in death by the love of his life, Odessa, with whom he shared many wonderful years until her death. They were never apart for the sixty years of their marriage, also two brothers; James Gill and Powell Gill, three sisters; Lucy Breen, Betty Cales and Susan Bennett and an infant grandson who died at birth. He has left to cherish many wonderful memories, a son James Edward Gill and wife Anne of Hinton, a daughter Bernice Arbutus Allen and husband David of St. Albans, a brother Daniel Gill and wife Sarah of Hinton, a sister Naomi Gill of Hinton; eight grandchildren who were the light of his life, Phillip Allen and his wife Angie and Jennifer and Jonathan Allen all of St. Albans; Ashleigh, Amanda, John and Shawn Gill of Hinton and Adam Gill of Huntington; five great grandchildren, Morgan Stock, Gage, Bentleigh, Alex Thomas and Dustin Allen all of St. Albans. They will all remember their Great Pop Paw with love. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to mention. He loved them all. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the Hinton Church of Christ with Fred Dinkler and John McCain officiating. Burial will follow in the Upland Cemetery near Hinton. Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton from 6-9 P.M. Friday and at the church one hour prior to services. His nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Lovell Williams, Gary Browning and Guy Ray.
