John Reed Jr.

John R. Reed Jr., 34 of Hinton died peacefully in his sleep after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday June 28, 2009. Born August 6, 1974 in Summers County he is the son of Roger and Patty Ratliff Reed of Madams Creek. John attended Martha's Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a 1992 graduate of Hinton High School who played on the Bobcat Football Team and achieved recognition as AA Coalfield Conference Honorable Mention. A lifelong resident of Summers County he attended Bluefield State College and was a former employee of Diversified Enterprises. John was a loving husband and father who was an avid outdoorsman enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Jack Ratliff, his paternal grandparents John and Evelyn Reed, Maternal great-grandmother Goldie Bennett, paternal great-grandmother Ollie Goff, sister-in-law Jane Wiseman Reed and a special aunt Liz Beasley. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 15 years Erica Clinebell Reed and their son John Parker Reed both at home. One brother Greg Reed and wife Amy of Ballengee and one sister Pamela Reed Hartwell and husband Jonathan of Charlotte, NC., maternal grandmother Lola Ratliff of Madams Creek, two nieces Jaden and Abigail Reed and three nephews Sylar and Zachary Hartwell and Aidan Meadows. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Thursday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel with Pastors Melvin Wills and Ronald Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call from 6 to 9 PM Wednesday at the funeral parlor. Pallbearers will be Daniel Gibson, Jason Tinsley, Osbey Cox, Mike Bennett, Curtis Wills, Zach Gill, Jackie Lee Ratliff and Jack Harvey. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Adkins, Kevin Sarver and Jonathan Hartwell. In Lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to the John Parker Reed Fund c/o Erica Reed at the City National Bank, P.O. Box 220 Hinton, WV 25951.
