Judith “Judy” Carol Ward Thompson, 78, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2023 at her home following a long illness.
Born December 9, 1944 at Sandstone she was a daughter of the late Glaspy O. and Edna “Pauline” Cooper Ward.
Judy was a member of the Cooks Chapel for nearly 30 years, though because of declining health she had not been able to attend since 2019. She was saved as a young girl. Judy attended Sandstone High School, got married at 17 and later obtained her G.E.D. She was licensed in Cosmetology as well as Real Estate. Judy taught herself to paint, upholster furniture, sew, read music, to play the organ, enjoyed singing, square dancing, family gatherings and tending to her flowers. She loved all her family fiercely and found the most joy and satisfaction in raising kids and keeping house usually whistling as she worked. Judy always gave her best in whatever she did, never quit until it was finished, her motto being “if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” She immensely enjoyed the wonderful care of her nurses and personal care aide during her final months as she anticipated her home going and reunion with her husband, Charles “Arthur” Thompson, Sr. who preceded her in death.
Those left to cherish her memory include, six children, Charles A. Thompson, Jr (Carmen) of Hopewell, VA, Sandra Thompson Lloyd (Garrett) of Hopewell, VA, Jackie D. Thompson (Julie) of Prince George, VA, Doni Lynn Durham (Brian) of Peoria, IL, Justin M. Thompson of Pipestem, WV and Krista Sommer Thompson (Ron Mutton) of Peoria, IL; six grandchildren, Daniel, Mary , Benjamin, Isaac, Jacob and Jordan; three great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Peyton and Theo; five younger siblings, Phyllis Jean Raiford of Princeton, WV, Linda Sue Donovan of Tampa, FL, Gary Dale Ward of Hinton, WV, Larry Ward of Pipestem, WV and Barry Ward of Charleston, WV; many nieces and nephews and her dearest friend Gail Acree.
A Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 P.M. Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Cooks Chapel Baptist Church in Pipestem with Pastor Dallas Peyton officiating. Friends may call from noon until time of services Thursday at the church. A private family burial was held prior to the services Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the Upland Cemetery near Hinton.
