Larry Gwinn

July 30, 1930 — April 4, 2020

Larry Ramsey Gwinn, 89, of Jumping Branch passed from this life into his heavenly home on April 4, 2020.

Born July 30, 1930 at Lockbridge, Larry was a son of the late Cornelius Breckenridge and Golda Lee Ramsey Gwinn.

Larry was a faithful member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Daniels. He was excited to be a born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and was always actively involved in his home church. He spent many years teaching Sunday School and sharing his love of music. Larry loved our great country and was a retired US Air Force Master Sergeant who served in France, Vietnam, Philippines, Texas, Florida and Illinois from 1950-1970. During his service to our country, he spent twelve years as an instructor for cockpit comfort systems. Following his military service, Larry was the Director of both Greer Technical School and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL where he led each of the schools in acquiring their accreditation status. He was also a retired teacher from Raleigh County Vo-Tech at which he taught heating and cooling. He was a man of many talents and passed on his knowledge of gardening, fruit trees, wood crafting and finding a song for every occasion with everyone he knew.  Larry loved his family and especially took pleasure in the family dinners every Sunday at his home. His children and grandchildren were treasured and time spent with them was precious to him. He was a firm believer in always doing your best. This showed in his work ethics, his love for family, and most importantly, in how he served his Lord.

Larry was preceded in death by one daughter, Valerie Kay Gwinn; one son-in-law, Jack Surin; one great grandson, Luke Ramsey Comer; four brothers, John Wesley Gwinn, Paul Gwinn, CB Gwinn Jr. and Nathan Gwinn; four sisters, Mabel Simmons, Faith Cozort, Joy Schulle and Gloria McFarland.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Phyllis Bailey Gwinn at home; one daughter, Yvonne Surin of Hinton; three granddaughters, Michelle Carmichael of Princeton, Carolyn Richmond and husband, David of Nimitz and Jessica Comer and husband Blaine of Lewisburg; four great-granddaughters, Mackenzie Lenn Carmichael, Lillian Beth Richmond, Hannah Grace Richmond and Jacquelyn Claire Comer; one great-grandson, Landon Jobe Comer; one brother, James Alexius Gwinn and wife Susan of Lockbridge and many nieces and nephews.

For the safety of the family and community, services will be private at this time with Pastor Larry Cochran officiating. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joseph Academy for Boys, 46 Opportunity Lane, Jumping Branch, WV 25969 or the Luke Ramsey Comer Scholarship Fund, 246 Grand Avenue, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
