Columbus M. Ward, 80, of Sandstone died Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Select Special Hospital in Charleston following a short illness. Born July 29, 1927 at Hix he was a son of the late Johnny M. and Ida Graham Ward. Columbus spent the early years of his life working in the coal mines and in a manufacturing plant in Lebanon, Ohio, the past 40 years were spent farming and raising cattle. Preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Dennis and Charles Ward; two sisters, Geneva Woolwine and Mabel Ayers. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Julia Mae Lowe Ward; one daughter, Patricia Halsey and husband Jack of Pilot Mountain, NC; one step granddaughter, Wendy Moeller and husband Bryan of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Madeline Richmond and husband Norman of Ramp; one brother-in-law, Richard Lowe and wife Carol of Kernersville, NC; one sister-in-law, Joyann Bumgardner and husband Ray of Hix; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with the Rev. Felix Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Cooper Cemetery at Sandstone. Friends may call from Noon till service time on Sunday at the Funeral Parlors. Randy Ward, Amos Hicks, Ricky Lowe, Scott Cales, Gene Ayers and Lewis Cales will serve as pallbearers.
