Margaret Bird Woodrum of Nimitz, WV, died at Charleston, WV, September 7, 2022, following a short illness. Born March 3, 1920 at Dixie, WV, she was the daughter of the late Newman A. Bird and Susie Ramsey Bird. She was a graduate of Hinton High School and received her A.B. and B.S. degrees from Concord University. She and her husband owned and operated Woodrum’s Store in Nimitz for many years. She taught in Summers County elementary schools, namely Ellison Ridge, White Oak, Jumping Branch, and she retired from Hinton High School in 1982, where she was an English teacher and choir director. After retirement she continued to be active in music by giving private piano lessons in her home.
She was a member of the Bellepoint Baptist Church for forty-seven years where she was pianist and organist, Sunday School teacher and youth worker. She then became a member of the Nimitz Baptist Church where she served as the organist and a member of the choir. She was a member of Gideons International Auxiliary, Beckley Camp, and has served as chaplain and president. She also served as a volunteer at the Appalachian Regional Hospital Continuous Care Unit in Hinton. She was a member of the Summers County Retired School Employees and a life member of Delta Zeta National Sorority.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard P. Woodrum, one daughter, Sara Lynn Massi, and a brother, Don M. Bird.
Her survivors include a daughter, Julie Kirk and her husband, William, of Charleston, WV; a son-in law, Joe Massi, of Cypress, TX; six grandchildren: Gina Fingleman and her husband Gary of Katy, TX; Steven Massi and his wife
Stacy of Katy, TX; Anita Edwards of Houston, TX; Eva Lally and her husband Jim, of Aquadale, NC; Dawn Surbaugh of Nimitz, WV; and
Jonathan Harvey and his wife Laura Koenig of Chesterfield, VA.; 16 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 pm Monday, September 12, 2022 at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Don Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, September 11, 2022 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral parlors.
Honorary Pallbearers will be from her church family.
