Mary Lena Jones Bennett, 98, of Forest Hill formerly of Beckley died 12:25 P.M. Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Summers Nursing and Rehab following a long illness.
Born April 17, 1911 in Monroe County she was a daughter of the late Shield Ballard Jones and Rose Ella Brooks Jones. A member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Beckley, Mrs. Bennett was a graduate of Forest Hill High School and Concord College. After graduation she went to work for the Raleigh Co. Board of Education where she taught at Coal City Elementary School until she retired. She enjoyed reading and loved the outdoors especially camping and fishing with her family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Simeon ?Sims? Bennett in 1973; one daughter, Linda Kay Bennett in 1954; nine brothers, Opie, Landon, Lindsey ?Slim?, Frank, Nathan, Woodrow, Murrell, Clarence, one infant brother and three sisters, Blanche, Pearl and Laura.
Survived by one sister with whom she had made her home for the last 3 ½ years, Catherine Meadows of Hinton formerly of Forest Hill and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Tommy Mounts officiating. Burial will follow in the Bennett Family Cemetery on Sunset Hill. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral parlors.
Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family requests that donations of sympathy be sent to Salvation Army, 312 S. Fayette St. Beckley, WV 25801.
