Mildred (Millie) Pauline Hamm Messer, 80, of Hinton, WV, peacefully arrived into the arms of Jesus on December 27, 2014 at Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.
Born on November 5, 1934 at Sandknob WV, she was the daughter of the late Homer Hamm and Orah Richmond Hamm Lilly.
At the tender age of 5, her father, Homer passed away. Later her Mother, Orah remarried Charles Wilson Lilly which brought two families to be loved and raised together all as brothers and sisters. With that said, in addition to her parents and stepfather, Charles Lilly, she was preceded in death by the following siblings: Faye Hamm, Donald Hamm, Rev. Darrell Hamm, Homer (Van) Hamm, Charles Lilly and Rev. Phillip Lilly. Her former husband, Benny Bennett also preceded her in death.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Women's Bible Class and Eastern Star.
Left to cherish their sweet memories is her husband of 43 years, Curtis O. Messer. Together, they owned and operated Messer's Photography Studio in downtown Hinton for 34 years as well as many other ventures such as Bluestone Tours, Lady Finelle Cosmetics and a radio show on WMTD called Coffee Call. Curt & Millie were one of the last great "true loves" of all time, that unconditional love that 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 shows us: Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. " It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" The last line being the strongest as Curt cared for Millie over the last 10 years of her illness. Love never fails.
Also left to carry on her legacy is her daughter, Kim Bennett Mounts, whom she loved with all her heart. They had a unique relationship which they could argue one minute and be laughing the next, but the deep love was always there. Some advice that Kim will always have from her Mom is to stand up straight, don't wear horizontal stripes, zip up your coat & don't go outside with your hair wet (which she did on her Mom's last day on earth to be by her side) just to name a few but above all to love God and to be a witness for others. Millie always had a burden for the lost and prayed often for our unsaved loved ones. Kim's husband, Greg Mounts was deemed a "keeper" right from the start, after 32 years of marriage, I guess she was right.
The first grandchild, Adam Gregory Mounts was the apple of her eye. They had a special relationship from the start and since he couldn't say Maw Maw Millie, it came out Memil and she will forever known as that special Grandma name of Memil. Memil fell in love with an Occupational Therapy Assistant that came to her home named Tiffany, who just happened to later marry her Grandson, Adam. She often referred to them as the perfect match and felt Tiffany was the answer to her prayers for Adam.
Next is the "favorite Granddaughter" (as she like to be called), Megan Kimberly Mounts (Morgan). Memil called her Megs Angel and rightly so since they both collected angels and believed in them. As a little girl, Megan always said she wanted to have a husband that would love her and treat her like her Gramps treated Memil. Another answer to her prayers, when along came Casey Morgan who is exactly as described above. He's a "keeper" too, she said. Memil said she just wanted to live long enough to see Megan on her wedding day and she did just that on August 30, 2014.
Keyley Faith Mounts and Corbyn Gregory Mounts are the great grandchildren that captured her heart as well. What time she got to spend with them was precious.
Other sibling survivors whom she loved are Virginia Wills, Myrtle Harvey, Mack Hamm & wife Rosella, Frank Hamm & wife Ruby, Mae Hurt & husband Vernon, Billy Lilly & wife Gwen, Shelby Jean Warden & husband Gerald, Lorene Tyree, Geraldine Meadows & Jacqueline McGuire. Sister in laws: Ruth Ham, Rhodetta Jones Hamm, Gloria Lilly, Velma Lilly. A cherished best friend and cousin, Betty Hall.
Other survivors are Curt's children, Greg Messer, Mark Messer, Bruce Messer & Mary Smith, their children & grandchildren.
Numerous special Nieces and Nephews in which Nephews will serve as pallbearers, Grandsons as honorary pallbearers.
She always had a sophisticated beauty like no other and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 2, 2015 by Pastor Robbie Merritt honoring the life of Millie Messer at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral parlors.
