Nellie Bennett

Nellie Lucas Bennett, 94, of Hinton went home to be with Jesus December 26, 2010 at Summers Co. Appalachian Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

Born January 18, 1916 at White Oak she was the daughter of the late Chap and Rhonda Vest Lucas. A lifelong resident of Summers Co., she was a member of the Hinton Church of Christ, retired employee of Celanese Corp., was recognized as a second place winner for her short story entitled Growing up on White Oak Mountain which was published in a book entitled Coals and Lamp Lites, avid gardener she enjoyed nature walks through the mountains, was well known for her homemade biscuits, canning of fruits and vegetables and her chocolate pies. As a teenage girl she would haul coal by horse drawn wagon to the family home after her father had blasted it in the mines.

Preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Clyde William Bennett, four sons, Rexall, Ellsworth, Franklin and Randy Bennett.

Survived by two sons, Rexford Bennett and wife Cynthia of Petersburg, VA and Roger Bennett and wife Frances of Danese; one daughter, Nelsie B. Cales and husband Jennings of Christiansburg, VA; seven grandchildren, Rexanna B. McCabe III and husband Billy of Prince George, VA, Michelle B. Peppers of Chester, VA, Derrick Bennett and wife Cheri of Simpsonville, SC; Steven Bennett of Danese, Matthew Bennett of Beaver, Brian Cales and wife Angie of Birmingham, AL and Craig Cales and wife Erin of Riner, VA; five great grandchildren, Ashley, Lindsay and Macie Bennett, Katherine and Jacob Bennett; two step grandchildren, Christine M. Cole and husband Don of Vero Beach, FL and Scott McGhee of Chester, VA; three step great grandchildren, Catlyn Cole, Austin and Hunter McGhee; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Upton and Mojean Fox of Hinton; one brother-in-law, Jackie Adkins of Hinton; two special nephews, James Vest and Billy Lucas; one special niece, Sherry Tickle and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor John McCain officiating. Burial will follow in the Simmons-Sluss Cemetery at Mt. View. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

A special thank-you to Dr. Shumult and the nursing staff at Summers County ARH third floor. She will be deeply missed by family and a multitude of friends.
