Nellie Harvey

Nellie Virginia Maxey Harvey, 92, widow of the late Elder Owen Darah Harvey, passed away at 1:50 A.M. Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the Summers Co. Appalachian Regional Hospital at Hinton, where she had been a patient since Wednesday morning. She had been in poor health for several years and in noticeable decline the last several months. Mrs. Harvey was born at Camp Creek in Mercer Co., WV on March 21, 1914 by birth certificate, but by family tradition, March 23, 1915. She was the eldest daughter of the late Henry Lawrence Maxey and Daisy Hattie Rose Maxey. She was united in marriage with the late Elder Owen D. Harvey at Pearisburg, Giles Co., VA on July 26, 1940 and they made their home in the Uncle George Reid house on lower Madamâ??s Creek. They later moved to Hines in Greenbrier Co. where they resided about 2 years while her husband was employed in mining. They returned to Hinton in 1945 and had resided at her current residence on the Raleigh Co. side of the New River across from Hinton since early 1946. Mrs. Harvey was born again as a young woman and along with her husband joined the Primitive Baptist Church in a home meeting in the home of Henry and Rosie Campbell Mann near Lewisburg on August 26, 1944 and was buried with their Lord in baptism on September 10, 1944 an remained a faithful and consistent member of the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church at Jumping Branch of which her husband was pastor for many years, as well as pastor of the Pipestem Church. She was a faithful wife, mother and pastorâ??s wife who earnestly looked for the coming of the Lord and the glorious resurrection day. She loved to go to church and was able to do so her last time on the fifth Sunday in December. She strongly supported Hebrews 10:23-25 and I Timothy 9-10. Mrs. Harvey graduated from Spanisburg High School on May 225, 1933. She was a good student and enjoyed Latin and higher math classes. She was a member of the Matthew French Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution having entered that organization on a paternal ancestor, Benjamin Harvey who joined Colonel James Madisonâ??s Orange County VA Militia on August 12, 1777. She was a descendant of other patriots including James Ellison who fought at the Battle of Point Pleasant. She was also a member of the Summers and Raleigh Historical Societies, West Virginians for Life and the Concord University Alumni Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Elder Owen Darah Harvey on August 1, 1989 and two infant sons; Owen Jr. on May 16, 1943 and Matthew on August 17, 1953, seven brothers; Stacey, Ray, Dale, Carl â??Busâ??, Fred, Calvin, and Bill Maxey, two sisters; Ivory Sitosky and Norma Maxey, her paternal grandparents, Josiah and Lucinda Virginia Houchins Maxey and her maternal grandparents William and Alice Moye Rose. She is survived by one son, Douglas Wayne Harvey with whom she resided, one sister, Mary Grace Blankenship of Princeton, WV, four sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Little Bluestone Primitive Baptist Church at Jumping Branch with Elder Richard Hurst officiating assisted by Deacon Barrie Pack. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors in Hinton from 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. on Monday and at the church one hour prior to services. Her Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
