Opie Young, 57, of Madams Creek went home to be with the Lord Monday, January 30, 2023 at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born August 25, 1965 at Roswell, New Mexico, Walker Air Force Base he was a son of the late Ople H. “Sarge” Jr. and Marilyn McPherson Young.
Opie was employed by the Department of Homeland Security Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation Bureau of Juvenile Services at Sam Perdue Juvenile Correctional Center with 22 years of service. He was a 1983 graduate of Hinton High School. Opie was a US Army National Guard Veteran and a member of the Division of Juvenile Services Honor Guard. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and his dog- Luka. Opie also enjoyed playing cornhole (playing in numerous tournaments), watching the Dallas Cowboys, listening to country music and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James Robert “Wetback” Young.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Emy Marie Young and Kara Alizabeth Via; two sisters, Liz Young Huffman and husband Greg and Robin Young Jeffries and husband Eric; one half sister, Cally Bradshaw and husband Billy; companion, Kelli Holland; former wife, Tabitha Young; nieces and nephews, Justin Young, Austin Dunn, Brady and Madelyn Smithson, Leslie Taylor, Kathi Hill and Makaylah Harrah; many great nieces and nephews and several friends whom he loved dearly.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Melvin Wills officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly-Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Friends may call from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral parlors.
David Gilpin, Doug Guess, Adam Smithson, Austin Dunn, Justin Young, Eric Jeffries and Cliff Pennington will serve as pallbearers. Ronnie Bennett, Walter Robinette and Robert White will serve as honorary pallbearers.
