Richard Thomas Newsome

Richard Thomas Newsome, 91, of Shady Spring peacefully went home to be with the Lord Thursday, March 6, 2025 at his home.

Born May 28, 1933 in Dingess, WV he was a son of the late Boda and Jesse Beckett Newsome.

Richard was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was the owner and operator of WV Explosives Company until 1980 when he sold, then he picked up a new lifelong hobby and became an avid golfer. Richard played baseball and was drafted by the Detroit Tigers, and later coached baseball in both Raleigh and Summers counties. He was a long time member of Bluestone Baptist Church. Richard was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family.

Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen Virginia “Ginger” Newsome; one son, Richard Dennis “Rick” Newsome; two sisters, Leola Hutchinson and Betty Clendenin and one brother, Luther Newsome.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, Robert T. “Rob” Newsome and wife Brenda of Shady Spring; one daughter, Regina Newsome of Beckley; one daughter in law, Mary Newsome of Jumping Branch; three grandchildren, Richard Boda, Olivia and husband Jamie and Rebecca; five great grandchildren, Eli, Dawson, Easton Rose, Brooks and Karsyn Dooley and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, March 10, 2025 at Bluestone Baptist Church with Pastors Doc Adkins and Josh Winkler officiating. Burial will follow in the Lilly – Crews Cemetery at Nimitz. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Sunday at Bluestone Baptist Church. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Southern West Virginia for the loving care they provided Richard. In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to Bluestone Baptist Church or Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
