Richard Simms

December 20, 1922 — October 21, 2011

Richard C. "Dick" Simms, 88, went home to be with the Lord Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fairlea following a long illness.
Born December 20, 1922 at Hinton, he was a son of the late Fred M. and Sibyl Upton Simms.
Dick was a member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and teaching Sunday School for over 30 years and was a 1941 graduate from Hinton High School. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII from March 1943 until January 1946 as a Technical Sgt. having served in Australia, New Guinea, Biak, Philippines and Japan.
Following his military service he worked for Dravo Corp. on the Bluestone Dam. He continued his career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons retiring as Chief of Mechanical Services in 1973. Dick also served five terms on Town Council and one term as Mayor for the town of Alderson, WV and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Neta B. Simms on August 20, 2011; his brother, Joe Sims and sister, Helen Miller Peaco.
Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Mary Sams and husband Barry of Warner Robins, GA and Nancy Allison and husband John of Fort Worth, TX; one son, Rick Simms and wife Donna of Alderson; four grandchildren, David Sams and wife Angie, Mark Sams and wife Amiee, Paul Sams and wife Stacy, Tamara Merritt and husband Adam and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson with Dr. Bill Bryan officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until time of services. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Contributions of sympathy may be made in memory of Mr. Simms to the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, P.O. Box 456, Alderson, WV 24910.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Ronceverte, WV.
