Robert Joseph "Joe" Rushford, 88 of Hinton went home to be with the Lord Thursday December 4, 2014 at Summers Co. ARH Hospital following a short illness.
Born August 8, 1926 at Hinton he was the son of the late James and Blanche Bryant Rushford. A World War II Veteran of the United States Army where he served his country as a member of Battery B 453rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion as a gunner on a M45 50 Caliber Quad Mount having seen action in Normandy (D Day plus 6) along with Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. PFC Rushford participated in the Liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. Joe served as Sheriff of Summers Co. from November 12, 1976 until December 31, 1976 and he worked for 42 years for C&O Railway until his retirement in 1989 as an Engineer.
Preceded in death by five brothers, James, Johnny, Charles, Bill and Bryant and one sister Kathern.
Survived by his wife of 31 years, Lena Jewel Linkenhoker Rushford of Hinton; one nephew, Charles Benjamin Rushford of Oregon and one niece, Martha Ann Ballenger of Brookville, OH.
Graveside Services and burial will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at the Restwood Memorial Gardens with Dr. Roy B. Carter officiating. Friends are asked to meet at 10:30 am at the cemetery. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy are to be made to the Ladies Auxiliary Children's Toy Fund of the Hinton Fire Dept. at 188 Pleasant St. Hinton, WV 25951; REACHH Family Resource Center to care for underprivileged children at 411 Temple St. Hinton, WV 25951 or your choice of a local food bank.
