Sally Vernice (Vernie as she was known on the mountain)Adkins Ward and Ms. Sally (as she was known at the nursing home), age 86, of Hix Mountain died Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 3:38 A.M. at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters following a long illness.
Born October 21, 1929 in Summers County, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas and Elsie Ellen Adkins. Both of her parents died at a young age and she was raised by her grandparents, Susie and Sam Cales. .
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Silas "Den" Ward on February 4, 2010; two infant children; a son in law, Jess Pendry; two brothers, Zane Blaine Adkins and James Arnold Adkins and one sister, Ocie Mae Cales. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Vernie was a homemaker and stayed busy raising her eleven children and one grandchild. She was a lifelong member of Shockley Hill Church of Christ and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. She had resided at Summers Nursing and Rehab Center since 2010 and made sure she attended their services every first Sunday of the month as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed quilting, playing Bingo, reading and visiting with her children. She loved going on car rides. Daddy and her went to Hinton off Hix Mountain just about every day (when questioned, they needed a gallon of milk or some other excuse) just to go on a ride. After she went to the nursing home this practice continued except we were going in the opposite direction (we went on the mountain just about every day). As soon as we got to the nursing home to visit with her she would say, "let's get out of here". The staff often said Sally is out of here more than she is in here. Her daughters spent many a day at the nursing home with her.
Those left to cherish her memory are her five sons, Larry Ward and wife Carol of Hilldale, Gary Ward and wife Jeanie of Hix, Grady Ward and wife Virginia of Jumping Branch, Vernon Ward and wife Amy of Pennsylvania, Kirt Ward and wife Jennifer of Hix; six daughters, Kay Holland and husband Harold of Marie, Vivian Ward of Pearisburg, VA, Patsy Mills and husband Ray of Clayton, June Pendry and companion Thom Johnson of Pence Springs, Laverna Gail Ward and husband William of Hix, Shelia Basham and husband David of Madams Creek; one granddaughter whom she helped raise, Joann Ward and companion Tony Cecil of Princeton; thirteen additional grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 28, 2015 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Benny Allen officiating. Burial will follow in the Cales Cemetery on Chestnut Mountain. Friends may call from noon until time of services. Family will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank Dr. Day, 2nd floor of SCARH, staff at Summers Nursing and Rehab Center and Bowers Hospice House for taking care of our mother and allowing the family to actively participate in her care. Special thanks to Mary Lynn Bennett and Nora Richmond. They would also like to thank everyone for keeping them in their thoughts and prayers, and for the phone calls and facebook posts during this difficult time.
