Sidney Dean Humphreys, 78, of Hinton, passed away Wednesday December 29, 2004 at his home, to be with the Lord after a courageous 11 1/2 year battle with cancer. Born at Cashmere, WV, January 17, 1926 he was the son of the late Frank G. and Ora Dent Humphreys. Sid was a Charter Member of the River Valley Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon and was active in all the affairs of the church. He was retired from the CSX Railroad with 36 years service as Roundhouse Foreman and Electrician, a member of the IBEW Union and WBCCI Airstream Club, and had done appliance service for over 50 years. He was a graduate of Peterstown High School and Cayne Electric School in Chicago, IL. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the LST 800 as storekeeper in the Pacific theater. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frankie Humphreys and a sister, Mary Ernestine Williams. Survived by his wife of 55 years, Irene Jones Humphreys, a daughter, Teresa Adkins and husband Bob of Wise, VA two sons, David Humphreys and wife Anna of Ashville, NC and Larry Humphreys of Sturgis, MI, one brother, Early Humphreys and wife Betty of Ballard, one sister Bernice Meadows of Ballard, four grandchildren Jesse Humphreys of Tallahassee, FL and Andy, Amber and Alex Humphreys of Sturgis, MI and five step grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at the River Valley Baptist Church on Rt. 12 between Hinton and Forest Hill, with Evangelist Roger Hatfield, Pastor Joe Spencer and Dr. Ray Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Red Sulphur Springs Church Cemetery near Ballard. Friends may call at the River Valley Baptist Church from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday and an hour prior to services Saturday. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. Men of the church will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Greenbrier Valley Hospice or the Gideons.
