Stephen H. ?Steve? Surber, 62, of Madams Creek, Hinton, died at 3:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at UVA Hospital at Charlottesville, VA following a long illness.
Born May 27, 1947 at Hinton, he was a son of Francis ?Hank? and Wilma Yancey Surber of Harrisonburg, VA.
Steve was a disabled employee of CSX Corp. for 38 years where he worked as Chief Yard Clerk, a member of TCU and a 1965 graduate of Hinton High School. Steve loved drag racing both as a fan and as an avid racer. He loved and supported the WVU Mountaineers.
Besides his parents he is survived by his wife of 15 years, Sandy Ratliff Surber of Madams Creek; one daughter, Missy Richmond and husband Kevin of Madams Creek; four grandchildren, Kevin, Kendall, Gage and J.D.; one sister, Sue Noel and husband Jim of Harrisonburg, VA and mother-in-law, Lola Ratliff of Madams Creek.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Roy Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbrier Burial Park near Hinton. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. on Friday at the funeral parlors.
Zach Gill, Mike and J.D. Fox, Gage and Kevin Richmond, Dakota Harvey, Jackie Lee Ratliff and Mike and Robert Bennett will serve as pallbearers.
Phillip Meadows, Carl Dale Wills, Sonny Vest, Donald Bennett, Roger Reed, Snookie Meadows, Harless Hosey and David W. Johnson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
