Thomas A. Akers, 80, of Pine Hill went to his eternal home Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at his home.
Born August 21, 1932 at Talcott he was the son of the late Charles J. and Margaret F. Allen Akers. He was a member of the Rollynsburg Baptist Church, retired Master Sgt. from the United States Air Force with 22 years of service, member of the Hinton Elks Lodge #821, member of the VFW Post 6723 in Alderson, WV. He was a proud graduate of the Talcott ?Brain? school. Following his retirement from the Air Force he was a salesman for Blue Grass Electric Co. in Ronceverte. Tom enjoyed spending time with all of his friends at Willowood where on the golf course they enjoyed all of the good times spent together. The hummingbirds around his house never went hungry as Tom would use 50# of sugar per year feeding them, he never knew a stranger as he would hand out candy to everyone he saw thus earning him the name ? Candyman.? His family affectionately called him ?Papa Bear?, ?PopPops? and ?PaPa Tom?. He was a loving father, husband and grandfather who cherished the time spent with them and his adopted cat ?Bogey?.
Preceded in death by two brothers, Hobert and Charles Akers.
Those remaining to celebrate his life include his wife of 21 years, Phyllis W. Akers of Pine Hill; son, Thomas A. ?Tom? Akers II and wife Kathy of Rocky Mount, NC; daughter, Donna L. Casanave and husband Paul of Toano, VA; first wife, June A. Simpson of Waynesboro, VA; two step-daughters, Pam Hensley and husband Bill of Sinks Grove and Sandy White and husband Steve of Sinks Grove; step-son, Steve Willis of Valley Park, MO; five grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
A celebration of Tom?s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Rollynsburg Baptist Church at Talcott with Pastor Dana Stalnaker officiating. A private family burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors and at the church one hour prior to service time on Saturday.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family requests that the next round of golf his friends play to hit a mulligan for Tom.
In lieu of flowers donations of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern WV and to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
