Vera Y. Johnson, 83, of Hinton, died at 4:45 P.M. Monday June 4, 2007 at the Summers Co. Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hilldale, following a long illness. Born December 18, 1923 at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Oscar B. and Martha Smith Yancey. Vera had lived all her life in Summers Co., she retired from teaching at Hinton High School when her health no longer allowed her to work. She received her Bachelors Degree form Concord College with honors and her Masters Degree from West Virginia University. She was a licensed airplane pilot and a former area reporter for the Beckley Post Herald. A long time member of the First Baptist Church in Hinton, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as the church treasurer for many years. Preceded in death by her husband, Claude Johnson Jr. March 2, 1978 and two brothers, Herbert and Harold Yancey and one sister, Lola Madge Yancey. Survived by four sons; Howard R. â??Bobâ?? Babineau and wife Joyce of Shady Spring, Thomas A. â??Thomâ?? Johnson and companion June Pendry of Pence Springs, David W. Johnson and wife Teresa of Hilldale and Richard A. Johnson and wife Terri of Lowell, five sisters; Helen McEvoy of Corte Madera, CA, Wilma Surber and husband Francis of Harrisonburg, VA, Elizabeth â??Bettyâ?? Schroeder and special friend Frank Grinstead of Hinton, Janet Lilly and husband Damon of Pipestem and Nancy Britt of Eagle Rock, VA; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel in Hinton with Pastor Ronald L. Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens at Hinton. Friends may call at the funeral parlors from 6-8 P.M on Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family request donations of sympathy may be made to the Claude Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Hinton Area Foundation, P.O. Box 217 Hinton, WV 25951.
