Vivian M. Hay, affectionately known as â??Sissyâ?? to her dear family and friends, 67, of Columbus, OH, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2007 at the Kobacker House surrounded by her family. Born July 30, 1939 at Thrumond, WV, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Eland and Mabel Naomi (Yancey) Via. In additional to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Hay; twin brother, Vernon Via and a sister, Nancy Lenora Huffman. Sissy spent most of her youth in Thurmond and Hinton, WV, where along with her brother and sister, she enjoyed nature, the hills, swimming and fishing. She moved with her family to OH in 1956 as she was a graduate of South High School class of 1957. Following high school, Sissy married, began her family and treasured her roles as mother and homemaker. In the 1960s, Sissy worked at the Columbus Electric Company where she participated in their annual variety show as a can-can chorus line dancer. Over the years, she had also been employed by the Columbus National Guard Armory and the State of Ohio, Department of Health. She retired in 2000 from The Ohio State University 4-H Extension Office following 10 years of dedicated service where she was responsible for State Fair event planning along with other various events she coordinated. Sissy attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, Martha Chapel United Methodist Church in Hinton; the church her great-grandfather helped construct in the 1800s and she sang as a trio with her mother and sister at the Eagle Rock Baptist Church in Eagle Rock, VA. She was a lifelong, avid fisherman, a fiercely loyal OSU Buckeye Football fan, a true friend to animals; especially dogs including Jake and a collector of anything and everything frogs. She was accomplished at crocheting, she composed poetry and she loved gospel music. Sissy savored trips home to her Dadâ??s farm in Hinton, WV to visit with family and enjoy nature at its best. She will always be remembered a loving, giving woman whose feistiness, precision and famous pumpkin cake rolls will truly be missed. Sissy leaves behind a legacy of compassion and love including her devoted children, Atina Young, Tammy (Gary) Lewis, Don (Avilda) Shortridge, Jerry (Linda) Hay, Mike (Connie) Hay, Doug (Connie) Hay, Diana (Rocky) Mann; precious grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer), Christopher and Laura Beth (fiancé, Alan Denekas) Young, Nikki (Adam) Clark, Gary and Tiffany Lewis, Gabriella Shortridge and Steven and Marcus Mann; 8 great grandchildren; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; dear friends, Dolly Edwards and Marge Mitchem; many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her fish friend, Hazy. Funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at the Martha Chapel United Methodist Church at Madams Creek with Pastor Robbie Merritt officiating. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from noon till time of the service on Wednesday.
