William Harper

William Grayson Harper, 84 of Sand Knob died Wednesday April 22, 2009 at Summers County ARH. Born June 19, 1924 in Summers County he was the son of the late William Grover and Demma Irene Harner Harper. Mr. Harper was a member of the Sand Knob United Methodist Church and the Hinton Masonic Lodge #62 A.F. & A.M.. Mr. Harper was a member of the United States Navy serving during WWII and the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from active duty in 1973 and entered the Navy Reserve from which he retired on November 1, 1983. After retiring he returned to his farm on Sand Knob. Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his stepmother Nellie Anderson Harper, his wife Girlie Gwinn Harper and an infant daughter Linda Carol Harper. Three brothers Bob, Gene and Richard Lee Harper and one sister Edith Harper Raines also preceded him in death. Bill is survived by his daughter, Rhonda Harper Farley and husband Cottie of Pipestem; four sisters, Gladys McClure and husband Elmer of Elkview, Nita Williams and husband Billo of Jumping Branch, Elaine Durrett of Nimitz and Peggy Montgomery and husband M.T. of Zion Mt.; one brother, Jimmy Harper and wife Connie of Shady Spring; two grandchildren, Mark Farley and wife Joni of Midland MI and Angela Richmond and husband Jody of Teays Valley; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive. Bill is also survived by his special care givers Jimmy and Venita Richmond with whom he had made his home for the past nine years. Funeral services will be held 2 pm Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor Chapel with Reverend Steve Runnion officiating. Burial will follow in the Harper Cemetery on Sand Knob. Friends may call at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlor from 6pm till 8pm on Friday. Family and friends will serve as pallbears. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations of sympathy be made to the Sand Knob United Methodist Church in Nimitz, WV 25978
