W.J. ?Bill? Humphreys, 79, of Hinton entered into eternal rest Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Charleston Area Medical Center General Division following a long illness.
Born October 4, 1932 in Hinton he was the son of the late W.H. and Mary Grace Tyler Humphreys. Bill was a conductor for the C&O/CSX Railroad until his retirement in 1987 with 33 years of service, member of the United Transportation Union, 51 year member of the Hinton Elks Lodge, charter member of the Hinton Jaycees, past president of the Hinton Little League where he served for 15 years, Bill had genuine care for the City of Hinton where he served for 2 years as a city councilman and 10 years as mayor. He played independent baseball in the King Coal League, coached the Hinton Fire Eaters baseball team and after his retirement he volunteered as a ranger for Pipestem Golf Course. Bill was an avid sports fan who enjoyed golfing and following his granddaughter?s softball career at Georgia Tech as well as following his other grandchildren?s sports and academic achievements. He enjoyed the Hinton Senior Center and socializing with his family and friends. Bill was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and David Alfred Humphreys and one sister, Helen Grace Humphreys Hamric.
Survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Ellen Humphreys at home; six children, James W. ?Billy? Humphreys and wife Pam of Shady Spring, Leigh Anna Rice and partner Bob Jagodzinski of Gay, Gary Lynn Humphreys and wife Karen of Chuluota, FL, Thomas Joseph Humphreys and wife Debra of Deland, FL, Penny Sue Humphreys of Charlotte, NC and Mary Jane Taylor and husband James W. ?Jimmy? Taylor Jr. of Jumping Branch; nine grandchildren, William Adam Humphreys, Whitney Ellen Humphreys, Zachary Brett Humphreys, Rebecca Lynn Humphreys, Austin Gray Humphreys, Jane Ellen Humphreys, Abigail Ragan Taylor, Hannah Ashley Taylor and James W. ?Will? Taylor III and two step-granddaughters, Jennifer Hardee and Ashley Andujar.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday July 9, 2012 at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Ronnie Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens near Hinton. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Sunday July 8, 2012 at the funeral parlors.
Bill?s family will serve as pallbearers and his closest friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
